Sunday Afternoon Activities
sunday dinners 1:00 - 5:00 PM
Every Sunday afternoon we get together from 1:00 – 5:00 PM for our big home cooked “family style” dinner. Being the excellent cook that she is (and yes, I’m prejudiced!) Yvonne always fixes a tremendous meal that is followed by a really delicious dessert!
While she puts the finishing touches on dinner, some of the servicemen and women read the paper, do the weekly Sunday crossword puzzles, or enjoy a hot cup of tea. Many check their email, surf the web, or play games on their phones. Still others take the opportunity to catch a few extra z’s (especially after a late night watch). While some who like to cook, actually help Yvonne in the kitchen.
We usually sit down to eat about 2:00 PM. After we say grace it gets really quiet for a while as everyone digs in! We talk, share story, and just get to know each other as we enjoy Yvonne’s culinary delicacies. I tell everyone, “If you leave our table hungry it’s your own fault!” No one has ever said galley food was better than Yvonne’s home cooking!
After dinner we go into the living room. We sing and worship with a variety of YouTube musicians. Afterwards we watch a Christian movie, or a DVD of a book of the Bible. We discuss the film and what we all got out of it.
We always close every Sunday afternoon by sharing prayer requests and praying for each other.
During the holidays, Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas a lot of servicemen can’t go home. Yvonne and I feel there isn’t anything worse during the holidays than being alone, stuck on the ship, or base and having to eat in the galley! So we get together and do the same family style dinner and activities in our home!
