The Genesis Story - Abraham

Dr. John Wagner

Are you interested in studying the book of Genesis? We're studying it on Wednesday mornings in our senior adult service (Young At Heart) at Azalea Garden Church. You can listen to the sermons here. I add new ones each week. You can listen online, or you can download the messages to your computer by right clicking on the title of the message, and then clicking 'save link as' or "save target as." Then you can listen to the sermon on your computer or ipod anytime you want without having to be online. You're also welcome to email me questions you may have about what you hear.

Tower of Babel - Genesis 11:1-9

After God delivered Noah and his family from the flood, Noah's desendants determined they were not going to replenish the earth as God commanded them, and built the Tower of Babel in open defiance.

Abram's Seed - Genesis 12:1-3

God promised to bless Abram, and to make him a blessing. He also promised that all people on earth would be blessed through him. That blessing was going to come through Abram's "seed". What was that seed? And how do all the nations of the earth fit into that promise?

Abram's Call - Genesis 12:1-9

In stark contrast to the people at the Tower of Babel, today's message highlights Abram's response to God when God tells him to leave his country, and his people, and his family.

Abram's Fear - Genesis 12:10-20

God promised to bless Abram, and to make him a blessing. But at the first test he experiences, fear enters the picture and Abram yields to it. Because of his fear of man and what man can do to him he makes a stupid decision! What was the decision? And what does his decision have to do with us? Listen and find out.

Abram and Lot - Genesis 13:1-18

Abram got himself kicked out of Egypt so he goes back to Bethel where he had built an altar before. Abram and Lot have too many animals to graze them in the same area. Their herdsmen start quarreling and Abram decides it would be better if they separate. Lot chooses first and takes what looks like the better part. But he pitches his tents toward Sodom. Abram goes back to Bethel and meets with God. Do you believe in second chances? God does!

Abram's Rescue - Genesis 14:8-16

Lot moves too close to sin and gets himself into trouble. He gets captured in a war between competing kings and tribes, and Abram comes to his nephew's rescue. If we want to see our families saved we too may have to intervene with speaking the truth to them in love.

Abram and Melchizedek - Genesis 14:17-24

Abram comes back after successfully rescuing Lot and is met by two kings. He is met by Melchizedek King of Salem and the King of Sodom. Who was Melchizedek and why is Jesus' role as our high priest connected to him?

Abram's Reward - Genesis 15:1-5

God meets with Abram and adjusts his perspective and then repeats His promises. Too often we lose our perspective too. Our relationship with God becomes about what we can get from Him, or what He can do for us. God ALWAYS answers our prayers. He has three answers, listen and find out what they are.

Abram's Righteousness - Genesis 15:6

"Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness." That one little verse in Genesis is a powerful statement, and really important! Our salvation is wrapped up in that one sentence. Listen and hear how Rabbi Saul of Tarsus explains the verse and it's impact on us.

Abram's Vision - Genesis 15:7-21

Immediately after Abram believed God for a son from his own body, God tells him He will give his offspring the land. His response is "But how will I really know I will gain possession of it?" God tries to reveal Himself to Abram, just like He tries to reveal Himself to us. God wanted a relationship with Abram, and He wants one with us. Listen to how that can happen!

Abram's Wives - Genesis 16:1-16

God promised to bless Abram with a son from his own body! Abram's wife Sarai comes up with a "brilliant" idea; or should I say a stupid idea? Sarai gives Abram her servant to become his wife and bear a child for them. Sort of like a surrogate mother. But things go terribly wrong! Listen and find out what happened.

Abram's Walk - Genesis 17:1-2

God told Abram to walk before Him...and be PERFECT...Is that possible? How in the world can a person be perfect in this day and age? You don't know all the bad things I've done in my life...and the bad things I do now! Listen and see what God says.

Abram's God - Genesis 17:3-8

God changes Abram's name to Abraham and tells him that He is making an everlasting covenant with Abram and his desendants. The God of this universe told Abraham He would be his God! Wow! Then He also promised Abraham that the land he was in would be his and his descendants' as an everlasting possession. How is all this "everlasting" stuff possible, especially in light of the fact that Abraham's descendants rejected the covenant?

Abraham and Circumcision - Genesis 17:9-14

God gives a sign to Abraham and his descendants for the covenant He has made - the sign of circumcision. But is this sign just a matter of removing the forskin of an eight day old baby boy or is it something more? What does that sign have to do with the eternal covenant, and what does it have to do with us as Christians?

Abraham and Sarah Laugh - Genesis 17:15 - 18:15

Abraham and Sarah both laugh when God tells them they will have a baby when Abraham is 100 years old and Sarah is 90. God gave Abraham the covenant promises face to face in chapter seventeen. So why did God appear and speak to Abraham again, and repeat the promises in chapter eighteen? What was different about chapter eighteen?

Abraham's Visitors - Genesis 18:1 - 15

Abraham has three visitors. Who were these three individuals that Abraham entertained? The scripture says one of them was the Lord. Who were the other two? Have you ever heard of a Christophany? Click on the link and listen to the discussion.

Abraham Intercedes - Genesis 18:16 - 33

Abraham stands before the Lord and intercedes for the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. Actually, I think Abraham was interceding for his nephew Lot and his family. What is intercession? It's awesome that Jesus Christ is alive and seated on the right hand of the Father interceding for us right now!

Lot Delivered from Sodom - Genesis 19

Two angels are sent by God to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah and to deliver Lot and his family. Listen and find out what the reason was for Sodom's destruction, as well as what happened to Lot and his family.

Abraham's Lie - Genesis 20

Abraham moves his family to Gerar and tells people that Sarah is his sister. He deceives Abimalech the king of Gerar who takes Sarah to be in his harem. This is the second time he does this. The first time was twenty four years earlier. What happens this time? Why is this chapter included in Genesis at all? And what does this story have to do with us?

Abraham's Family Problems - Genesis 21

The promised son is finally born amidst much rejoicing! But then problems develop that create problems between Sarah and Abraham. Having Abraham take Hager as a second wife was Sarah's idea, but now Sarah insists that Abraham send them away. This time God says it's alright, and Abraham sends Hagar and Ishmael away. So what is there for us to learn?

Abraham and Sarah's Faith - Romans 4:13-5:2 and Hebrews 11:11

Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness. He received strength to father the son of promise. Sarah herself, after all of the unbelief expressed in their story in Genesis, comes to the place where she too believes God is able to do what He has promised. And as a result, received strength to conceive seed, and bear the promised son. It is through only through faith in the promise of God, the Word of God, that we can please God. But we have to hold on to that faith unswervingly!

Abraham's Test - Genesis 22

Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness. He received strength to father the son of promise. But then God asked something of Abraham that tested his faith. He asked Abraham to sacrifice his son as a burnt offering. The parallels between Abraham and Isaac, and Jehovah and Jesus are incredible! Abraham and Isaac were a picture of God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ.

Abraham's Servant - Genesis 24:1-9

Abraham sent his servant to get a wife for his son Isaac. He was to get her from Abraham's clan in the land from which he had come, NOT from the women in Canaan. Why? And what has that got to do with us in this day and age?
